Playing NOT to Lose vs Playing to Win
The 2020 class of the CFJ Coaching Success School wrapped up last month with extraordinary results. The 36 students collectively billed over $3.6M—during a pandemic! They served their clients in bolder, stronger ways. They took risks, got uncomfortable, grew their professional self-esteem and "left it all on the court."In the final session a student shared her awareness about how she realized she had been playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. Talk about a powerful insight!When playing not to lose, the game becomes about avoiding pain—aka avoiding the no. It's easier to collapse into social self, people pleasing, role reversal, and in-action. The desire to "get it right" outweighs the willingness to "get it done".When playing to win, the game becomes about bold action. No's become less personal. We know we'll miss some baskets along the way but the more we shoot the ball, the more likely we will score. It's easier to take risks, hold in our leadership, withstand discomfort and live into "done is better than perfect."Are you playing not to lose in your coaching practice? In your enrollment process?
