The New Year Billings Reset—Back to Zero

For coaches, this time of year can include thoughts like:
“I don't know if I can create this level of billings again next year.”
“I hate that the new year starts at zero and we have to climb the money mountain again without any guarantees.”
“I thought this year would be the year I crossed six figures. Will that ever happen for me?”
If you're experiencing your own version of this, you aren't alone. The below will give you new insights to consider.
THERE ARE NEVER GUARANTEES
It's easy to think that being an employee offers guaranteed security. You may even have day dreams about how working at your last job you never had to experience the “reset” each year in your business/making money and how much better that felt.
Yet, if you didn't show up for that job—if you didn't do what was required of you as an employee—you would be let go.
The truth is: You showing up is the guarantee.
And guess what? That is the one thing within your control in your coaching practice. How you show up (how open, creative, willing) and how often is on you.
CHOICE AND CONSEQUENCE
All choices have consequences. The choice to be a professional coach and run your own business comes with some wonderful benefits, such as: time/schedule freedom, the ability to work from home/anywhere, financial freedom/unlimited financial potential, deep impact in the work and more.
Amazing, yes?
This choice also comes with a fresh start every new year. The game resets and you get to decide how you want to play it.
Learning to accept this and even welcome it can do wonders for your work…and creativity!
If you love the beneficial consequences, find a way to love this one too. It's possible…I promise.
PS: If you haven't yet experienced the financial benefits I mentioned, you aren't alone. Making money as a coach is a process. It took me five years before I crossed the six-figure mark. My first year as a coach I made $7K total. Stay in the game. Learn and practice your skills. Take care of yourself. The journey takes as long as it takes.
COLLECT EVIDENCE
The longer you are in business and the more successful you become, the easier it is to see these thoughts for what they are—fear doing it's job to protect you and keep you in your comfort zone. Knowing this, you can train yourself to give those thoughts far less weight.
One of my clients crossed six-figures and then multiple six-figures for three years in a row. This is three years of facts gathered. The evidence is clear, they know how to show up for their work (see point one) and can start to trust that more fully.
In other words, the fact-based evidence gets more weight than the fear-based narratives of, “I won't be able to do this again. It was beginners luck.”
CREATION, MAINTENANCE, DESTRUCTION
My meditation teachers says: There are three universal truths according to the Vedas (ancient body of knowledge of universal law): Creation, Maintenance and Destruction.
All of them are valuable and necessary. One is not better than the other.
If you look at the laws of Nature, you see this all the time. Winter is destruction that allows for Spring's creation. Summer moves into maintenance until Fall leads the shift into Winter.
When you think about a new year or a new beginning be conscious about the phase you're in.
Is 2024 a season of:
expansion in your work where you're inspired to create new things and reach new goals?
maintenance where you stay close to what you created this year?
destruction and reinvention where you let things go so new can be born?
I have lived through each of these phases over the last four years. Naming where I was on my journey—Creation, Maintenance, or Destruction—helped me honor what was right for me and be on my side. This is especially true when I was in a season of destruction—aka letting things go without knowing what was coming next.
What season are you in?
Your answer can make a difference as you think about the new year.
No matter where you are, your timing is perfect. Learning to flow with your season versus resist or deny it is a learning curve. Be patient with yourself.
