The Untapped Gift We’re Afraid to Open
Today is the best day of someone's life. It's the worst day for someone else. And, for the rest of us, it's somewhere in-between.
I've been thinking a lot about this. How our human experience is so varied from day-to-day. Different…and yet, the same.
Choosing to be human means choosing pain. We can't choose love and not experience pain. The more wholehearted we live our lives—the more we open ourselves to connection and intimacy, the more we risk loss, sadness, and grief.
It hurts when something we cherish goes away.
It's easy to think that Love is what hurts us, but that's not the truth. When we slow down and allow ourselves to feel our most tender moments, we'll find love there waiting for us.
I'm experiencing one of those moments right now and I feel Love's presence all around me. My Big Self is holding me, guiding me, wiping away my tears as I deepen my appreciation for the preciousness of life.
We have a tremendous gift in our feeling capacity, yet we've been conditioned away from it. We've been taught to be afraid of our lower tone emotions. We've also been taught to be afraid of our higher tone ones too.
(Note: I relate our feelings to the keys on a piano. There are 88 keys for a reason—because all are necessary to make beautiful music. The same is true for our emotions. Our highs and lows play off of one another to create a rich and meaningful life.)
Joy can feel as risky and unsafe as sadness.
But it doesn't have to be this way. We can expand our capacity to feel.
As we do this, life gets better. We become less afraid. We let ourselves take greater risks and have the fullness of this existence—the goodness, ecstasy, and joy, as well as the despair, anger, and sorrow.
It's easier to do this if we nurture our relationship with Love. Love is the container for our feelings. It's the piano that houses all the keys.
No matter where you are on the scale of best to worst days, can you gently lean in and give yourself permission to feel a little more?
It's courageous, and in my experience, worth it. Only then can you discover how Love shows up to celebrate or comfort you on the other side.
With loving,
Amber
